The Institute for Human Services

Who We Are

The Institute for Human Services, Inc. (IHS) works with nonprofits, for-profit businesses, funders, government entities, and community leaders to create a network of collaboration and communication aimed at improving the quality of life in the Southern Tier. We believe that success is achievable when organizations can break out of their silos and are given the right tools to meet a common goal. Our focus is on the good of the community. We are a dynamic and responsive entity, able to provide the information and resources that are most needed in the community, both for organizations and individuals.

IHS provides services such as the 2-1-1 HELPLINE, Steuben Rural Health Network, Coordinated Transportation Services, Resource Development, Member Services, and Lead Agency Services as a capacity building, information, and referral opportunity for our member organizations.

IHS is a 501(c)(3) local association that provides a united voice for the Southern Tier nonprofit sector and serves as a unique support and information provider.

What We Do

IHS operates many programs in the Southern Tier that benefit nonprofits and the local community. One such program is the Coordinated Transportation Services' (CTS) Volunteer Driver Program.

The Volunteer Program connects riders to volunteer drivers. Volunteer drivers provide rides to non-emergency medical trips such as doctors, clinics, hospitals, specialists, and pharmacies. Without a car of one’s own, access to both services and amenities is a major challenge. When it comes to health care – the prime destination source for rides provided by our volunteers – this barrier can have potentially devastating consequences. These can be averted by providing both information and services to our clients.

Volunteer drivers are reimbursed for miles driven at the federal level ($0.53 per mile). Their efforts ensure the health and wellness of individuals in our community!
